How to Highlight a Screenshot on Mac

Highlight important parts of a Mac screenshot with built-in tools, and learn when to use arrows, boxes, text, and crop for clearer communication.

Highlighting a screenshot helps the viewer know what to look at first. That matters when the screenshot is going into a bug report, support reply, design review, or AI prompt.

The best markup is usually simple. One clear highlight is better than five competing annotations.

Use the floating thumbnail

After taking a screenshot, click the floating thumbnail before it disappears. macOS opens a Markup window where you can add shapes, text, and other annotations.

This is the fastest built-in way to mark up a screenshot.

Use Preview for saved screenshots

If the screenshot is already saved:

  1. Open it in Preview.
  2. Click the Markup button.
  3. Add a shape, arrow, line, or text.
  4. Save the file.

Preview is enough for most basic markup.

What kind of highlight should you use?

Use the markup that matches the job:

GoalBest markup
Point to one thingArrow
Show an areaRectangle
Call out textHighlight or underline
Add contextShort text label
Remove noiseCrop

The mark should reduce confusion, not decorate the screenshot.

Good screenshot highlighting examples

Use a highlight when you need to show:

  • the exact button that failed
  • the broken layout area
  • the unexpected message
  • the input field with an error
  • the setting someone should change
  • the result of a bug

If the viewer has to ask "what am I looking at?", the screenshot probably needs a highlight.

Avoid over-marking

Too much markup can make a screenshot harder to understand.

Avoid:

  • multiple arrows pointing at different things
  • long paragraphs inside the image
  • covering the issue with a shape
  • using bright marks on every element
  • highlighting something already obvious

Keep the screenshot focused.

Highlighting for AI tools

If you are sending a screenshot to ChatGPT or another AI tool, a simple arrow or box can make the question clearer.

For example, instead of asking "What is wrong with this?", mark the spacing issue and ask for layout suggestions.

Final takeaway

To highlight a screenshot on Mac, use the floating thumbnail or Preview Markup. Add only enough markup to guide attention, then send the screenshot while the context is still fresh.
